Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE) California Water Environment Association (CWEA) The Director of Education will have an entrepreneurial spirit and lead the educational programming, content development and instructional design strategy for CWEA's statewide digital and face-to-face professional development portfolio. The Director of Education will collaborate with an internal team of professionals charged with delivering high-quality programs and events to meet the evolving education and professional development needs of California's wastewater professionals. The Director of Education will lead and direct volunteers to build upon current solutions and develop new, leading-edge programs and offerings to meet the evolving needs of our members and industry. The position requires experience in developing and managing a wide variety of educational programs from small, face-to-face programs to large scale multi-faceted conferences as well as online/virtual learning, including the overall planning, development, budgeting, and execution. A working knowledge of adult learning theory and how it can be appropriately applied in a variety of learning environments is required.-- Essential Duties and Responsibilitiesinclude the following. Other duties may be assigned by the Executive Director: EDUCATION & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Develop and manage CWEA's education program and learning experiences, including education events and e-learning. Conference, workshop and seminar management and oversight (including exhibits and e-learning)
  • Develop, plan for, and analyze the educational needs of all professionals across the continuum of position types and scopes of wastewater professional staff.--Implement CWEA's educational strategy through the design and delivery of highly desirable, innovative education programs via digital and face-to-face workshops, conferences, certification prep courses, and other delivery mechanisms.
  • Develop relationships with industry subject matter experts and recruit & prepare high-caliber industry experts to add value to CWEA's professional development content and experiences.
  • Establish cross-functional relationships with all internal staff program stakeholders (education, marketing, member services, finance, etc.) to facilitate innovative education program development initiatives, and adhere to production timelines, from inception through product launch.
  • Serve as the staff liaison for various program committees, including CWEA's Education Committee and conference programming committees, and direct other Education staff liaisons in their activities. Effectively engage and cultivate volunteer and member strengths to achieve high performance outcomes and experiences.
  • Employ adult learning best practices and utilize current technologies to support learner engagement. MEETINGS & CONFERENCES
    • Develops, directs and executes the strategic and operational plans for all meetings and convention activities.
    • Prepares convention and event budgets, develops and manages departmental budget to achieve targeted revenue and bottom line, provides prompt and accurate forecasts, ensures timely processing of departmental accounting activities.
    • Conducts and leads site inspections, prepares and negotiates contracts with hotels, convention centers, vendors and service providers for future meeting needs and housing requirements.
    • Approves copy and design of education-related marketing and communication materials and program, signage and other meeting materials as needed.
    • Reviews and approves contracts for meetings, meeting vendors, and logistics before final authorization by Executive Director to ensure budget adherence and protection of the association's financial resources and brand.
    • Collaborates with Marcom department to ensure successful marketing and communications of meetings-related activities.
    • Collaborates with Exhibits and Sponsorship Manager to ensure all product and service marketing opportunities successfully meet marketing, contract and event obligations, deadlines and budget.
    • Conducts and presents post-event analysis and makes recommendations for future events. GENERAL/LEADERSHIP
      • As a member of the leadership team, supports and fully participates in all association activities as a key contributor and staff leader.
      • Manage all internal and external resources necessary to ensure the successful implementation and support of education programs.
      • Supervise and develop staff to deliver education programs on time and within budget to meet technical and quality standards. Manage direct reports' performance to achieve strategic initiatives/goals.
      • Participate as an active contributor in the budgeting process, reviewing departmental financial statements monthly to ensure Education department activities are meeting and exceeding association fiscal budgeted needs.
      • Maintain current professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing professional networks both in the wastewater and association communities and participating in professional industry associations.
      • Other duties may be assigned. Requirements Qualifications:

        • demonstrate solid knowledge and understanding of program development, meeting and convention planning, exhibit management and contracting principles;
        • facilitate productive and effective conversations and meetings in person and virtually;
        • manage and lead staff team and be an effective, contributing team member;
        • manage multiple projects and timelines;
        • meet schedules and deadlines;
        • communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing;
        • work effectively with members and volunteer leaders on the telephone, online, and in person;
        • collaborate effectively with a workforce composed of volunteers at distant locations;
        • work professionally and effectively with contractors;
        • define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and develop processes and project plans, including improvements to status quo;
        • perform work with minimal supervision;
        • travel to meetings throughout California approximately 12-20 times per year (1 to 6 days duration). Education and Experience:
          Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities can qualify. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities is:
          • Bachelor's degree in related field. Certificate in meeting planning and/or association management a plus.
          • Minimum of 7 years of experience in developing and delivering continuing education and events in a professional association or similar environment.
          • Previous supervisory experience required.
          • Demonstrated experience working with Learning Management Systems, Association Management Systems and Customer Relations Management systems.
          • Experience in writing and developing education needs assessments.
          • Proven contract negotiation, meeting planning and sales experience.
          • Ability to deliver on-time and within budget approved projects within established parameters using own judgment and related work experience in executing responsibilities.
          • Proven ability to plan effectively to anticipate and avoid problems and troubleshoot as needed.
          • Demonstrated ability to independently plan and implement professional development experiences in a variety of innovative settings and formats. Managerial and Leadership Experience:
            Five to seven years experience managing personnel with demonstrable background in building and mentoring a team, fostering an inclusive and welcoming culture with staff, establishing trust and space to innovate and test new concepts. Management experience in seminars/conferences, e-learning, volunteer management and communication/marketing operations desired. Organizational Relationship Experience:
            Work professionally and effectively with representatives of the hospitality industry; visitors and convention industry; and with contractors; vendors and suppliers to the trade show; work constructively and cooperatively with a workforce composed of volunteers at distant locations. Licenses and Certificates:--
            Possession of a valid Driver's License, and evidence of insurance. Certifications in meeting planning and association management are a plus. Physical Demands and Work Environment:
            While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; sit; use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects; tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. --During conferences, employee is required to work extended hours. Employee regularly uses personal computer with VDT screen for extended periods of time. The employee must regularly lift and or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The noise level is usually quiet. Employee is required to travel by airplane and car several times per month. Travel to conferences and committee meetings throughout California approximately 12 to 20 times per year (1 to 6 days duration).
