Responsible for providing complex communications strategy, management, consultation, planning, implementation and recommended solutions for the Kaiser Permanente organization, functions, programs and projects across a broad variety of internal and external audiences (KP leaders, employees, influencers, media, members, consumers, etc.) to support organizational business strategies and to promote and protect the KP brand.
Provides oversight and/or leads communications strategies and tactics that support the growth and market strategies essential to KP's strategic plans, revenue, membership and margin goals.
Managers provide strategic thinking and leadership skills that enable teams to:
1) identify and optimize business solutions through strategic communication leadership;
2) evaluate findings and make formal recommendations to a number of stakeholders including up to C-level KP executives;
3) design communications strategies that optimize KP business strategies, programs and priorities;
4) bring forth technical/content expertise (competitive intelligence, business acumen, sophisticated communications strategies, tools and techniques);
5) mentor/review/approve team member communications recommendations and work on a variety of topics.
Incumbents would advise and/or manage team members whose work includes strategic communications leadership, planning, and tactical implementation in both day-to-day and high-risk situations. Selects, develops, evaluates, coaches, and advises personnel.
(Major Responsibilities: it is assumed that each higher level job will be proficient in & be capable of performing the duties of the lower levels in the job family)

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Oversees a team responsible for managing a key area of focus within the PR and Communications department.
  • Works with PR/Comms management to develop scope of work for team, sequencing work, defining business problem and communications solution, setting strategic and business direction, context & priorities for the team.

  • Oversees staff that provides high-quality communications services: writing, editing, research, design, production, program management, etc.

  • Assigns, tracks and manages communications consultants/specialists and other professionals as needed to support the development and implementation of strategic communications plans, programs and projects.

  • Provides oversight, coaching & guidance to management-level staff.

  • Serves as liaison with other related departments (brand management, multimedia services, marketing communications etc ) to ensure consistent application of Kaiser Permanente brand standards, style guide, and other processes and procedures.

  • Serves as a collaborator and an integrator with other professionals in Program Offices, regions, and service areas related to the successful communications programs and materials.

  • Educate and communicate goals, strategy, and methodologies clearly and persuasively.

  • Build relationships with internal and external partners.

  • Serve as back up to director and/or senior director.

  • Proactively manage team members' performance and development.
  • Provides managerial responsibility for one or more teams of increased depth/breadth/complexity.

  • Accomplishes results through peers and subordinates, who exercise significant latitude and independence in their assignments.

  • Develops performance requirements.
  • Contributes to determination of organizational structures.
  • May have budget responsibilities.
    Basic Qualifications:
    Experience
  • Minimum eight (8) years of experience in PR, Communications or similar roles.
  • Minimum two (2) years of management experience.
    Education
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, public relations, business administration or related field, OR four (4) years of experience in a directly related field.
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.
    License, Certification, Registration
  • N/A

    Additional Requirements:
  • Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated excellence in directly supporting senior executives in large organizations and influencing their approach to communications while nurturing the relationship.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and manage complex projects: ability to work effectively with team members and executives under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends with short or little notice given the demands of providing communications support to the functional areas.
  • Additional skills required in team management and development.
  • Must be able to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
