Founded in 1991 and based in Oakland, CA, Youth ALIVE! is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization whose mission is to break the cycle of violence and uplift a thriving community of leaders rooted in Oakland and beyond through prevention, intervention, healing, and advocacy. Its direct service programs focus on violence prevention, intervention, and healing, and serve youth, adults, and families in and around Oakland who are most directly affected by violence. The advocacy work promotes local, regional, and national best practices to reduce violence and its root causes.
Currently, Youth ALIVE! has a budget of $6 Million with a staff of 50, many of who have personal experience overcoming violence and/or incarceration. Over the last decade, the agency budget has quadrupled, the staff has tripled, and the number of programs has grown from 2 to 7 direct service programs.

Youth ALIVE! seeks a dynamic, collaborative, and inclusive Executive Director (ED) who will inspire, support, and advocate for staff and the community as they work to prevent and intervene in moments of crisis and heal the trauma that violence causes. Youth ALIVE! is experiencing a period of organizational growth and is excited about deepening its impact by expanding existing programs and raising the organization's visibility and profile, both locally and nationally. The board desires a strategic thinker and a people-focused leader who can ensure the current portfolio of programs is thriving while positioning the organization for the future.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED serves as the Chief Executive Officer who leads the organization in advancing Youth ALIVE!'s mission.
The ED leads the organization in refining and operationalizing Youth ALIVE!'s strategic direction and plan and oversees the financial management and operational aspects of the organization. The ED is the primary spokesperson responsible for external relations, education, and advocacy on behalf of violence prevention policies.
Key Responsibilities of the Executive Director include:

  • Organizational Leadership: Provides leadership to keep Youth ALIVE! focused on its values and mission in how operations and programs are carried out in a changing socio-political-economic environment. Leads the execution and updating of the agency's strategic plan. Supervises the Associate Director;
  • National Leadership: Participates in the Health Alliance for Violence. Manages national training projects and federal grants and advocacy. Represents Youth ALIVE! and advocates for our health approach to violence prevention in national media, conferences, and speaking engagements;
  • External Communications and Advocacy: Develops and maintains collaborative working relationships with key strategic partners. Supervises the Policy & Advocacy Director who oversees the Teens on Target and Advocacy for Change;
  • Administration and Financial Oversight: Supervises the Operations & HR Director, who ensures compliance with legal obligations and oversees all facilities. Together, creates a positive staff environment and facilitates opportunities for professional development for all staff. Maintains strict accountability for hiring, evaluation, and personnel. Assumes an active role in organizational development and maintains a positive organizational culture. Supervises the Finance Director. Oversees financial management and fiscal sustainability and accountability;
  • Program and Fund Development: Ensures high-quality program performance to maintain high standards that support agency. Oversees program planning and development to achieve agency mission. Takes overall responsibility for fund development. Supervises Development Manager. Actively cultivates relationships and opportunities with a broad spectrum of funders. Identifies and executes development strategies and promotes the visibility of Youth ALIVE!;
  • Working with the Board of Directors: Provides leadership and support for the Board's fulfillment of its governance responsibilities, capacity building, and major donor cultivation.
    To fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Executive Director candidate has the following:
    • Demonstrated commitment to racial equity, eliminating disparities, and leading through an equity lens, including experience and comfort representing Youth ALIVE! in a variety of settings and to diverse audiences;
    • Knowledge and experience working in communities impacted by high rates of violence;
    • A natural connector with excellent listening, oral and written communication, and relationship-building. A leader who can authentically build bridges between people from different backgrounds and communities, as well as with public officials, organizations, sectors, and public agencies;
    • Past success with diverse funding sources, including individual donors, foundations, government agencies, and corporate support, as well as skillful development of earned income streams;
    • Experience fostering a culture where individual contributions are celebrated and respected and freedom of expression is encouraged;
    • Policy, advocacy, and movement-building experience; a natural community organizer;
    • A leadership style marked by professionalism, accountability, emotional maturity, intelligence, and demonstrated skills in collaborating, modeling humility, and creating a positive work culture that welcomes, supports, and shares power with others from different backgrounds;
    • A confident, non-hierarchical leader who is also adaptable and humble, who works alongside the team, develops and empowers staff by relying upon their technical expertise, and views all involved in the organization through an asset/strengths-based lens;
    • An employee-centric team builder, mentor, and coach who is continuously seeking to incorporate feedback, maximizing staff potential and at their best when supporting others in their professional growth and development;
    • A transparent and solid communicator who is unafraid to speak truth to power and a compelling storyteller who invites others to join in the transformative work;
    • Familiarity with trauma-informed care and the importance of addressing secondary and vicarious trauma for staff working in the field of violence prevention and intervention;
    • Personal experience in overcoming violence/ violence-related injuries/ the criminal justice system is highly valued.
      Youth ALIVE! offers a salary of $165,000-$185,000 annually, depending on experience, and a comprehensive benefits package, including dependent coverage, 403b contribution, tuition reimbursement, sabbatical policy, and generous vacation and holidays. More details can be provided upon request.
