Job posting will remain open until a suitable candidate has been identified.DESCRIPTIONDEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:As an Organized Research Unit of UC San Diego, the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) is considered a leader in data-intensive computing and cyberinfrastructure, providing resources, services, and expertise to the national research community, including industry and academia. Cyberinfrastructure refers to an accessible, integrated network of computer-based resources and expertise, focused on accelerating scientific inquiry and discovery. SDSC supports hundreds of multidisciplinary programs spanning a wide variety of domains, from earth sciences and biology to astrophysics, bioinformatics, and health IT. SDSC launched Comet, a petascale supercomputer that joins the Center's data-intensive Gordon cluster. SDSC is a partner in XSEDE (eXtreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment), the most advanced collection of integrated digital resources and services in the world.The Data Enabled Scientific Computing (DESC) division within SDSC designs and jointly proposes with other SDSC researchers, High Performance Computing (HPC) systems in response to multi-million dollar ( 20 million dollars and above) call-for-proposals from NSF, various government organizations and UC entities. DESC manages, operates and troubleshoots issues with these advanced, leading edge, complex, multi-petaflop and multi-petabyte data intensive supercomputer systems, and file systems housed at SDSC. Research leaders within DESC submit high performance computing (HPC), computational science and scientific software research proposals and acquire funding from NSF, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD) and industry. The division provides consulting and advanced user support to researchers and users from other national universities as well as collaborating with them and other industrial users. DESC carries out HPC, computational science and scientific software research and development projects. DESC provides advanced computational science and scientific software support for the national and UC user communities as a part of the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) project, a five-year, $121-million project supported by the NSF that enables more than 10,000 scientists to use the supercomputers, data and visualization resources. This division stays current with HPC, computational science and scientific software research and technology trends and engages with supercomputer vendors (e.g. Dell, Intel, IBM, Cray, Hewlett Packard, Data Direct Network, Mellanox, Aeon Computing, Arista etc.) to remain current with future technologies utilized in supercomputer designs.POSITION OVERVIEW:The HPC Systems Administrator will apply professional concepts and department and campus, medical center or Office of the President policies and procedures to resolve systems problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors, as well as perform routine work, with detailed instructions provided on new project and / or more complex assignments and initiatives. Within defined procedures and practices, the incumbent will determine the appropriate action.Responsibilities for this position will include hardware monitoring and replacement, system administration with on-call duties for large scale HPC clusters with high-performance interconnects such as InfiniBand and multi-gigabit Ethernet. The incumbent will assist with the implementation of HPC solutions to address a variety of problems and tasks in scientific areas related to advanced computing and networking. Under the direction of the Systems group manger, s/he will work with complex systems and networks in production, research and performance evaluation environments. Additionally, s/he will be responsible for the maintenance of system internals, hardware, network and operating systems and the interrelationship of all the foregoing. The HPC Systems Administrator will actively monitor clusters to insure high system availability and work closely with User Services and other groups on planning system maintenance and to integrate the HPC systems into the SDSC networking and user environments.   • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Experience administering Linux/Unix systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing HPC hardware including compute, storage management and network equipment.
  • Basic understanding of Ethernet and IP networking, including VLANs, subnets and routing.
  • Proven understanding of how system management actions affect users and dependent / related functions. Particular understanding of how these actions affect multi-tenant and multi-node environments that are characteristic of HPC systems.
  • Demonstrated experience writing and editing scripts of moderate complexity used to perform system maintenance and administration. Ability to use said scripts to automate tasks. Familiarity with Unix/Linux shell scripts such as Bourne and Bash.SPECIAL CONDITIONS
