Job Description:

SUMMARY New Media (NM) Exhibit Developers are the primary staff responsible for exhibit creation, from idea generation and concept development through design and implementation. Although exhibit ideas may come from many sources and fabrication may be accomplished in coordination with other staff, NM Exhibit Developers drive the process of transforming exhibit ideas into interactive, physical form using digital technologies. Exhibit development at the Exploratorium emphasizes iterative prototyping and incorporates input from outside advisors, public visitors, and project team members including project directors, other exhibit developers, graphic designers, writers, scientists, and evaluators. NM exhibit developers are also expected to collaborate on other types of experiences for visitors, including demonstrations and programs, to contribute to overall project and exhibition development, and to participate in developing proposals for new exhibits and exhibit areas. The Senior New Media Exhibit Developer position differs from the NM Exhibit Developer position in its emphasis on self-direction and independent creation of high-quality exhibit experiences. This position reports to the manager of the New Media Exhibit Developer group. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Execution: o Consistently deliver high-quality exhibit experiences across a number of projects with minimum supervision; model best practices in all areas of exhibit creation. o Design screen-based and physical user interfaces. o Make hardware and software platform decisions, program applications, and build circuits as appropriate for exhibits. o Scope work within time and budget parameters. Meet project milestone and final deadlines. o Idea generation: reliably produce a wide variety of compelling and engaging exhibit ideas, interactions, and interface designs. Iteration: observe visitors and work with evaluators to iterate prototypes based on feedback. Documentation: document exhibits, demos, and source code according to standards set by the shop, new media group, and project leadership. Facilities Work/Institutional Support: o Contribute to general museum operations, including shop and/or lab maintenance, exhibit maintenance, material ordering and stocking, and equipment upkeep. o Contribute to determining hardware and coding standards and best practices within new media projects and the new media group, as well as assist other museum staff, visiting artists and contractors in meeting these standards and practices. Flexibility: adapt to project constraints with proactive solutions; work comfortably and productively on a range of projects from grant-based R&D to projects for external clients. Work across a range of technologies, code bases, and interaction paradigms, choosing and implementing the best platform for the project at hand. Judgement: make timely exhibit design and development decisions; show strong creative discernment and good discipline around editing of ideas; understand when to move forward with a prototype and when to move on. Other duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS BA/BS in a New Media field, Human-Computer Interaction or a combination of art/design and computer science or electrical engineering, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum five years prior new media design and development experience. Two years Exploratorium experience preferred. Intermediate shop skills: wood, metal, and/or plastic fabrication. Strong coding skill in Processing, Arduino, Java, JavaScript, and a C++ framework such as openFrameworks or Cinder; Max/MSP/Jitter and OpenGL a plus. Strong user interface, user experience, and interaction design skills. Strong physical computing and circuitry skills. A portfolio of exhibits that demonstrates an ability to create unique and robust, high-quality visitor experiences, and an ability to find promising exhibit ideas in specific content areas. Demonstrated understanding of how to uniquely represent and interact with phenomena, whether scientific, perceptual, social, data-driven, or algorithmic, through new media. Excellent eye for visitor use issues, and demonstrated ability to work with a visitor research and evaluation team to address issues. Demonstrated ability to work on several exhibits and programs simultaneously with minimal supervision. Talent for collaboration and effective teamwork, and demonstrated ability to work with people at all levels of an organization.
