You will be responsible for developing this project within Livermore Computing (LC) while partnering with Science and Technology groups to understand their computing requirements and challenges for next generation computing. You will coordinate activities related to computational science hiring, communication, and outreach in LC, partnering with other leaders in LC and the Computing Directorate to strengthen science and engineering applications knowledge within the computer center. You will have a leadership role in recruiting, retaining, and promoting LC post doctoral candidates, including supervising post doc mentors and participating in career planning. This position is in the Livermore Computing Division within the Computing directorate. LC delivers High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms, software, and services to Laboratory programs. Essential Duties - Define and establish a computational science focus area in LC, leveraging strategic engagements with internal and external sponsors, and attracting and retaining projects, programs, funding, and staff. - Build and lead a Computational Science Group of LC staff and post-docs with expertise in scientific computing, scientific applications, and data science. - Provide highly advanced technical leadership and manage multiple parallel tasks and priorities of customers and stakeholders to ensure that deadlines are met. - Serve as a member of the Computing Directorate's workforce team and be involved with strategic planning activities related to recruiting, staffing and retention, and strategic hiring initiatives. - Mentor project members by providing technical leadership and guidance in a variety of aspects of Computational Science and High-Performance Computing (HPC). - Establish and maintain partnerships with Science and Technology leaders across the lab to ensure effective communication, teamwork, and customer satisfaction represent LLNL in external interactions with the HPC community, sponsors, and vendors. - Communicate LCenabled computational science successes through seminar series, articles, award nominations, and other public relations efforts, as well as serving on external scientific or technical committees. - Partner with LC's Hotline, training team, Development Environment Group, and the El Capitan Center of Excellence to assist the code teams in application preparation and to share knowledge, provide training opportunities, and develop and publish best practices. - Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications - Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computational Science, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience. - Expert-level experience in areas such as HPC architectures, parallel programming, computational science methods, andor data management and analysis. - Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills to contribute technically to teams solving complex HPC problems while handling multiple priorities and tasks. - Expert knowledge and experience conducting high quality, independent research and developing implementations to evaluate results. - Extensive experience as an evaluator on technical review committees (e.g. scientific papers, vendor proposals, project proposals, technical reclassifications). - Experience effectively planning and implementing new projects, including technical cross-disciplinary efforts. - Extensive experience and ability to champion, apply, lead, and develop cutting edge principles, theories, concepts, and technologies. - Extensive leadership and supervisory experience in a technical environment with the ability to build cohesive and diverse teams with expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management andor external sponsors. - Ability to occasionally travel for meetings, training, and conferences. Desired Qualifications - Expert knowledge of a range of HPC systems, science and engineering applications, and libraries and tools. - Experience interacting with HPC users on testbeds, in early beta testing of hardware and software, and in large proposal-based programs. Pre-Employment Drug Test External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor. Security Clearance This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance. If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processedgranted.
