Health & Housing Reporting Fellowship | Institute for Nonprofit News

Company: Institute for Nonprofit News
Location: oakland
Posted on: May 3, 2021

Job Description:

El Tmpano's Health & Housing Reporting Fellow will play a key role in an in-depth reporting project examining overcrowded housing and its impact on COVID-19 rates and other poor health outcomes experienced by Oakland's Latinx and Mayan immigrants. This 6-month project is a collaboration between El Tmpano, Journalism + Design, and media partners.

The fellow will interview impacted community members and other local stakeholders, and investigate practices and policies that have contributed to overcrowding and health inequities, as well as levers for change. Their reporting will be published and/or broadcast by media partners.

This reporting will not take a conventional approach. Guided by a collaborative design process, the stories and angles you pursue will be driven by conversations with key stakeholders to ensure that our reporting responds to and elevates the needs, experiences, and ideas of those who are most affected. It will also place a particular emphasis on identifying and exploring systems at play and opportunities for change.

The fellow will be expected to spend approximately 8-10 hours/week on this project from December 2020 through May 2021.

* Conduct interviews with impacted community members and other stakeholders * Work with the Project Director & Assistant Producer to involve El Tmpano's audience in the reporting process, and with El Tmpano's team as well as media partners to edit stories for publication/broadcast * Participate in workshops with stakeholders to map systems related to the issue and utilize such processes to pursue reporting on policies and practices that contribute to overcrowding and public health inequities * Write a series of articles for print and/or radio that include individual stories, relevant data, and an examination of policies, systems, and solutions

* Commitment to El Tmpano's mission of equitable news and the amplification of diverse voices * At least 2 years of experience in local, public health, and/or investigative journalism * Demonstrated commitment to journalistic integrity, a practice of curiosity in the pursuit of reporting, and an interest in transformative approaches to journalism that involve community members and equip audiences to engage on the issue * Adaptable, self-directed, and able to learn and iterate through innovative processes * Fluent in English and Spanish

* Experience producing and writing for radio * A familiarity with Latinx and/or Mayan communities in Oakland and health issues impacting these communities * Based in or around Oakland, CA * If you think you'd be a great fit but don't quite have all of the skills and experiences listed here, we encourage you to submit an application and tell us why you'd excel in this reporting fellowship.

The fellow will receive a $1000/mo stipend for 6 months, as well as hands-on experience in systems thinking and community engagement for journalists to involve impacted community members and other stakeholders in the reporting process.

Application deadline is November 16. To apply, fill out this form. If you have any questions about the application or this position, email mb[at]eltimpano[dot]org.
