Job Description:

Honors Pathway (HP) seeks to recruit Adjunct Faculty candidates on behalf of its partner universities, in order to teach ENGLISH COMPOSITION ground-based college classes in its inaugural MicroCollege program site in Oakland, CA helping low-income students transition to college. The estimated start date for the position is June 15, 2021 (or sooner).

Honors Pathway is a social venture headquartered in Oakland, CA. HP partners with a growing network of non-profit, regionally accredited universities and public high schools to operate MicroCollege programs. These unique college pathway programs enable low-income students to complete their first two years of college in a highly supportive environment at no cost to them or their families.

MicroCollege is designed to help students who are college capable, but not yet college-ready, successfully transition to college. College courses and coaching are offered in small class sizes at standalone MicroCollege sites. In addition to college faculty, each cohort of 30-35 students is assigned a Success Coach and two Tutors who provide over 500 hours of academic coaching and support each year.

Faculty Qualifications:

  • Educational accomplishment consistent with the discipline of courses they will teach, including a Masters degree or higher in the discipline of the course,
  • Demonstrated success in supporting the academic achievement of students who are college-capable, but not yet college-ready, including low-income students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to inspire confidence in each students ability to learn.
  • Ability to instill a growth mindset in students.
  • A commitment to developing effective teaching and learning within an affiliate model.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate with a diverse group of students and staff.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and distribute syllabi which inform students about course requirements, grading requirements, testing assignments, absence policy, and other pertinent information for each course assigned.
  • Meet assigned classes on time and provide highly effective instruction to students.
  • Develop and implement creative strategies for assisting students with unique needs across a wide range of college preparedness.
  • Utilize MicroCollege systems to designate students who need enhanced support.
  • Coordinate with leadership from the Main Campus as required.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity in working with students and staff of diverse racial, ethnic, academic and socio-economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, and disabilities by showing respect for differences and the dignity of others.
  • Prepare, administer, and grade assignments and examinations in a timely manner to inform students about their progress and to provide opportunities that will allow students to master material. Use multiple measures of assessment. Include opportunities for research and outside assignments when appropriate.
  • Encourage the use of support services by students. Collaborate with support services staff to ensure that appropriate information is being shared and discussed.
  • Attend and participate in meetings as determined by partner universities and site staff, and keep posted office hours.
  • Other duties as assigned

Additional Information:

  • Successful candidates will be required to submit official transcripts, as well as undergo a pre-employment criminal history background check with fingerprinting.
  • This a part-time, contract role and will require on-site instruction. HP and its University Partners will require adherence to all COVID related safety requirements.
