The Position

Apply to be a Recreation Leader I. The City of Oakland is currently recruiting to fill part-time Recreation Leader I positions in Oakland Parks, Recreation & Youth Development Centers for the summer. Working hours will vary from week to week. Recreation Leader I's coordinate cultural programs, special events, and field trips; issue and monitor the use of recreational equipment; perform general facility and equipment inspections and routine maintenance. Recreation Leader I's are primarily responsible for providing customer service, working collaboratively with colleagues, displaying role model proper behavior, conducting light cleaning as needed, maintaining supplies and equipment, preparing snacks, coaching sports teams, and training junior counselors. Additional duties may vary by recreation center.

Under supervision in Oakland Parks, Recreation & Youth Development, Recreation Leader I's use a full range of technical skills to conduct and provide leadership for recreational programs in a community based setting; provide recreational equipment to patrons; and perform related duties as assigned. Recreation Leader I is distinguished from the higher level Recreation Leader II classification in that the latter is responsible for on-site programs and more complex recreational programs and provides direction to assigned City staff and volunteers.

Selective certification may apply for some positions that may require specific bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, or Mandarin.The hiring list established from this recruitment may be used to fill all vacancies (those that require bilingual skills as well as those that do not) in this classification.

Examples of Duties

  • Lead games and free-play, arts and craft activities.
  • Coach sport programs.
  • Admit patrons to recreation facilities, programs and events.
  • Oversee patron use of recreation equipment/facilities in compliance with City rules and regulations.
  • Inspect condition of equipment and supplies for safety standards and maintenance needs.
  • Schedule and coordinate leisure education programs and activities.
  • Coordinate special events, programs and field trips.
  • Complete forms and reports.
  • Design and distribute flyers to promote program activities.

Minimum Requirements for Application

Any combination of education and experience that is equivalent to the following minimum qualifications is acceptable.

Education:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

At least five-hundred (500) hours of part-time experience comparable to City of Oakland Recreation Aide, participating in a wide variety of recreation activities including sports, arts and crafts, and/or other organized activities.

Candidate must be at least eighteen (18) years of age or older by June 1, 2021 to apply.

Additional Qualifications:Bilingual skills in Spanish, Cantonese, and Mandarin are highly desirable for certain positions.

License/Other Requirements:

Individuals who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid California Driver's License throughout the tenure of employment OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties.

Candidates who receive conditional offers of employment will be required to submit fingerprints, undergo a criminal record clearance,have drug testing and atuberculosis (TB) screening.

Possession of a valid Basic First Aid certificate may be required.

Possession of a validCPR certificate may be required.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Techniques, rules and equipment used in a variety of recreational activities and games.
  • Oral and written communication skills; public contact skills.
  • Departmental rules, regulations and practices regarding health and safety procedures.
  • Safe work practices.

Ability to:

  • Conduct recreation activities.
  • Act responsibly; give clear instructions; provide coaching and facilitate the learning process.
  • Utilize first aid and safety principles and practices in accordance with departmental rules and standards.
  • Follow oral and written directions.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
  • Demonstrate an interest in working with people.
