Our Geotechnical/Dams and Hydraulics Group is looking for an experienced Project Geologist to join our Roseville, CA or Oakland, CA team!

The Roseville and Oakland offices primarily support hydroelectric clients and their related projects. The Project Geologist organizes and performs geologic investigations to characterize and evaluate geologic/geotechnical conditions, and to identify geologic factors that could impact the design, construction, and/or long-term performance of engineered structures.

Project work performed and supported by the Project Geologist includes: geological and geotechnical investigations, rockfall evaluation and mitigation, storm damage assessment and repair, geologic hazard evaluation including fault and seismic source characterization, geotechnical and structural instrumentation, and water conveyance inspections (canals, tunnels, penstocks, etc.). The Project Geologist applies a broad knowledge of principles and practices, often working on multidisciplinary teams. This role involves working on and managing multiple small projects or moderate-sized tasks within larger projects.


  • Compiles and analyzes geologic data, including geologic maps, aerial photographs, construction records, and other background document information.
  • Performs geologic field reconnaissance and mapping for the identification of geologic hazards and site characterization.
  • Plans and manages subsurface field geologic subsurface investigation programs using rotary/percussion drilling and borehole/surface geophysical methods. Prepares field exploration work plans and job hazard assessments.
  • Performs logging of borings, rock coring, fault trenching and test pits.
  • Applies standard practices and techniques, interprets and correlates geologic and laboratory data, prepares cross-sections and geologic maps, develops conceptual geologic models, recognizes and resolves discrepancies in results using a systematic process.
  • Prepares comprehensive technical reports with supporting figures and tables.
  • Performs construction observation activities including: foundation preparation, instrumentation installation, scaling of rock slopes, and rockfall mitigation measure installation, etc.
  • Adheres to project quality assurance/quality control, and health and safety protocols
  • Performs periodic client coordination and attends project meetings
  • Prepares, maintains, and tracks project budgets, schedules, and reports needed to achieve project goals
  • Concurrently manages multiple small projects and/or significant tasks within larger projects; management includes tracking of project resources, scope, budgets, schedules, and deliverables in accordance with quality management system
  • Mentors and manages geosciences/engineering personnel to accomplish tasks
  • Assists with managing existing clients, developing new clients, and identifying new business opportunities

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • BA/BS degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, or Geological Engineering,
  • 6 - 10 years of professional experience of increasing responsibility in engineering geology type projects
  • Current Professional Geologist (PG) license in California
  • Experience in developing, conducting, and managing engineering geology projects/tasks independently or as part of a larger team
  • Experience in performing independent geologic research and preparing reports, tables, and figures with focus on detail and accuracy
  • Ability to thrive on a diverse, close-knit, and dynamic geology team and willingness to learn from experienced mentors
  • Strong, professional level oral and written communication skills
  • Proficient use of standard office software programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.)

Preferred Education and Experience

  • MS degree in Geology, Engineering Geology, or Geological Engineering
  • Current Certified Engineering Geologist (CEG) and/or Certified Hydrogeologist (CHG) registration in California
  • Experience with project management on multi-disciplinary teams
  • Experience primarily related to water conveyance/storage, hydropower, and infrastructure projects
  • Experience in preparing Drilling Program Plans for significant and high hazard dams as defined by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC)
  • Knowledge of geotechnical instrumentation equipment
  • Experience with assessing rock stability (natural and cut slopes and within tunnels), performing computer-based stereonet/kinematic analysis and rockfall simulations, and performing design of rock support/rockfall mitigation
  • Experience in using various professional software tools, such as Rocscience suite, RockWorks, gINT, LiDAR/photogrammetry software (Agisoft Metashape, Maptek PointStudio), GIS, etc.
  • OSHA 40-hr. HAZWOPER Certification
  • Rope access certification, SPRAT Level I through III
  • Strong client management skills
