We have also celebrated the ?heroes?, who primarily work in nonprofits delivering essential services like affordable housing, social justice advocacy, health, youth development, to the arts. Yet these nonprofits continue to rely on a flawed, inequitable funding system that often impedes their ability to make a difference. Nonprofit Finance Fund is setting out to change that. We are a nonprofit lender, consultant, and advocate with 40 years of experience committed to reforming the nonprofit funding system. We know that financial knowledge and access to appropriate lending products are power for nonprofit leaders. We are now evolving our strategy to focus on helping to shift funding and financing practices so more money flows equitably and with less restriction to community-centered organizations led by and/or serving people of color.

Position Summary:

The Financial Planning & Analysis Department (FP&A) serves as a critical connection between NFF?s finance, strategy, and resource development functions. As part of NFF?s strategic commitment to racial equity, NFF is undergoing extensive analysis and planning. FP&A supports this work, ensuring decisionmakers have access to timely and relevant data and understand the financial and mission implications of strategic choices. FP&A also serves as NFF?s financial storytellers?ensuring that staff, Board, investors, and other stakeholders understand the connection between NFF?s mission and NFF?s financial performance, position, strategy, and outlook.

Reporting to the Associate Director of FP&A, the Senior Associate supports NFF?s Budgeting and Forecasting functions. These functions support FP&A?s charge to ensure resources are available for delivering on NFF?s strategy. The Senior Associate will serve as our internal expert on Adaptive Insights, the planning software we use for all budgeting and forecasting activities?ensuring the system?s accuracy, efficiency, and effectiveness.

The ideal candidate will exhibit budgeting experience, technology adeptness, exceptional attention to detail, an orientation towards being of service, and a passion for the work of NFF.

This position may be based out of any of NFF?s five offices (New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Oakland, Los Angeles). Remote work may also be considered. NFF will not require attendance in any office until Summer 2021 at the earliest.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Budgeting & Forecasting

+ Assist the Associate Director of FP&A in creating the annual budget and semi-annual revised budget, creating tools for and collecting data from multiple business units

+ On a monthly basis, create updated forecasts for the current fiscal year, coordinating with staff across the enterprise to understand changes to:

+ Pipeline for grants and fees for service

+ Loan interest and fees

+ Personnel

+ Other administrative expenses

+ Interest expense and provision for loan losses

+ Perform revenue analysis to give insights into revenue risk

+ On a quarterly basis and as needed, check in with all business units to anticipate any significant variances from the budget

+ Manage the budget modification process, ensuring that changes to the budget are requested and approved according to internal policy

Internal Reporting

+ Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements

+ Assist in the preparation of financial statements and analysis used by the Leadership Team, Board and Board committees

+ Analyze financial and enterprise-wide data to track financial trends

+ Provide grant reporting and track grant releases for management

+ Own re-granting process

+ Provide detailed financial activity reports around revenue and expenses to staff and management

+ Provide support in preparing enterprise-wide dashboard reports to track performance against benchmarks

Accounting & Controls

+ Assist Controller and Finance team in monthly and year-end closings, as well as during annual audit process

+ Ensure Finance?s accounting system (Blackbaud / Financial Edge NXT) is fully reconciled with FP&A?s planning system (Adaptive Insights)


+ With the support of an external consultant, serve as the FP&A Team?s expert on Adaptive Insights, ensuring data accuracy and refining the system for efficiency and effectiveness

+ With the support of NFF?s Operations Team, improve the efficiency of Finance and enterprise data systems, with the design theory principle of ?single source of truth?

Team Participation

+ Be a trusted resource and support internal clients with data driven management and financial analysis as needed across the organization

+ Deliver customer service excellence by providing timely, thorough, and friendly responses to internal and external stakeholder inquiries

+ Represent FP&A on cross-functional organizational projects as needed

+ Complete ad hoc projects as directed by Finance Leadership (CFO, Controller, and Associate Director, FP&A)

Essential Requirements for Education and/or Experience:

+ Commitment to NFF values and strategy

+ Demonstrated commitment to and knowledge of the social sector and racial equity

+ Four-year undergraduate degree or equivalent experience

+ At least 2 years of relevant work experience

+ Knowledge and/or experience with accounting, financial statements, and reporting

+ Experience creating complex financial models, forecasts, and reports

+ Outstanding computer literacy, with advanced proficiency in Adaptive Insights, Microsoft Excel and other Office Suite applications

+ Aptitude for learning new technology

+ Strong interpersonal skills that contribute to a collegial working environment

+ Demonstrated ability to speak and write in succinct, informative, and friendly manner such that content, expectations, and timelines are clearly understood by an audience

+ Ability to manage multiple priorities from a variety of sources

+ Attention to minute detail

+ Ability to handle confidential information and/or issues using discretion and judgment

Specialized Knowledge/Beneficial Skills and Experience:

+ Mastery of Adaptive Insights, Salesforce, and Blackbaud / Financial Edge NXT

+ Understanding of nonprofit accounting

+ Experience with lending institutions, especially Community Development Financial Institutions

The salary range for the Senior Associate position begins at $69,000.
