Job Summary

Blue Shield of CA is committed to and investing in transforming healthcare for every Californian. We are looking for a senior product manager to help reimagine the entire healthcare system.

The Director, Product Management, Design Studio is a business-minded product designer and developer that manages the many small details as well as s/he/they does the big ideas and big picture. S/he/they are constantly coming up with new ideas for transforming healthcare, thinking critically about which of them will make the biggest impact, and partnering to design, test, learn and bring the product to market. S/he/they have deep experience with design thinking and disciplined experimentation, coupled with strong user empathy and experience developing products for multiple users and customers.

The Director will lead a team of product managers, visual, UI and UX designers, consumer and enterprise app developers and process designers who are responsible for designing new products for Blue Shield members, customers and healthcare providers. The products s/he/they design will drive transformation of the current healthcare system into an affordable, value-based, community-integrated system that equitably serves the needs of all.

S/he/they know how to measure and interpret the results of the team's efforts, thrive in cross-functional roles, and love working side-by-side with partners and subject matter experts inside and outside of Blue Shield and the healthcare industry. S/he/they easily manages several projects at once, works iteratively and with an agile mindset even while under pressure, and is accountable for results.

The Director will work closely with leaders and teams who design payment models, care management technology, community health, pharmacy and lifestyle medicine products as well as with sales, marketing and network management teams. You will partner with these teams to design and develop products that improve healthcare access and outcomes for all.

S/he/they will lead the Health Transformation Lab's execution of the product design and development cycle, guiding products from conception to the hands and lives of our members and the communities we serve-all while analyzing feedback and data, packaging, promoting, and tailoring solutions to users.

The Director, Product Management's objectives will be directly linked to metrics including user and customer satisfaction and achievement of intended outcomes so s/he/they must be able to design experiments to test, validate, learn and leverage insights to support product decisions.

  • Use quantitative and qualitative data and information, validation interviews, user testing and market signaling to develop solutions into products and services that members, providers, and consumers want to use.
  • Partner to design disciplined experiments, prototypes, MVPs and pilots that test and validate hypotheses and solutions and inform design decisions.
  • Assist partner teams in conducting user and market research and refining and optimizing products and services in response to responding user feedback.
  • Partner to develop a roadmap of products/services and features that will create meaningfully better health outcomes for Blue Shield members and community members.
  • Partner with IT and other teams and external development shops to identify, build or buy technology vendor solutions that support or accelerate products/services.
  • Define, track and analyze success metrics.
  • Develop and support delivery of new features and capabilities for existing products.
  • Work collaboratively with pilot implementation, communications, marketing, and go-to-market teams.

Knowledge and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • 10+ years of product design, development and management experience.
  • Experience developing healthcare, health and wellness, consumer health, insurtech, consumer mobile, or enterprise software products, services and technologies.
  • 6+ years of managing multidisciplinary teams (designers, UX, engineers, product management, project management) to design consumer and/or enterprise products and services.
  • 5+ years partnering with cross-functional teams (Sales, User Experience, Engineering, IT, Marketing, Product, Program Management, Compliance, Security, Legal, Business Development, and Support).
  • Direct experience managing an agile, user-centered product design and development process.
  • 3+ years experience leveraging data and analytics to create products or support their success.
  • Master's in design-related discipline or MBA.
  • Experience driving product vision, go-to-market strategy, and design discussions.
  • Experience designing and conducting A/B tests across digital platforms.
