Job Description for Engagement Specialist
As our direct care staff work with youth that are 18-24 years
we require that applicants are at least 25 years old.
Covenant House California is seeking qualified applicants to

Applicants that have experience working with youth that have
experienced homelessness, who have traumatic histories, identify as
LGBTQ, are gender non-conforming and/or who often face multiple
issues and have complex needs. Applicants with knowledge and/or
experience working with youth development programs, utilizing a
harm reduction framework, using trauma informed practices and will
value working with a multi-disciplinary team to create a safe
inclusive environment would be highly preferred.

Covenant House California (CHC) is a non-profit agency whose
mission is to serve homeless and trafficked youth (18-24) to offer
safety, hope and opportunities to move forward.
Under the supervision of the Director of Community Engagement,
the Engagement Specialist, will be responsible for providing
workshops, wellness groups, education and employment support, light
case management to youth that are unstably housed and provide an
overall presence throughout the Wellness Center during drop in
hours to youth experiencing homelessness. The Engagement Specialist
will be expected to engage in both coordination of the program as
well as direct client services and thorough data collection of
services and unique youth served. The Engagement Specialist will
infuse knowledge around trauma informed service, harm reduction
practice and positive youth development programming in a their
daily work with youth that are dealing with complex trauma
including trafficking, mental health challenges, substance use and
overall wellness. The position will work collaboratively with CHC
staff and other service providers in the community and is also
responsible to ensure that documentation and data tracking is
entered into HMIS and ETO. CHC is committed to meeting young people
where they are, accepting them for who they are, applying an
approach to engagement that is relentless, so that they can fulfill
Engage in day outreach efforts to offer services to youth
experiencing homelessness or unstably housed ages 18-24 outside of
the Covenant House shelter program. Day outreach efforts will also
include offering services to the youth on the Covenant House
shelter wait list and in the Wellness Center.
Oversee drop-in hours for program participants at Covenant House
Wellness Center. Duties would include checking in participants,
offering basic necessities such as food, clothing, and hygiene, and
monitoring the overall safety of participants while onsite for
activities and creating a safe, affirming, inclusive environment
for youth to recover in daily.
Support and ensure the intake process of clients into the
Wellness Center program; performing assessments, orientation, and
Plan, lead, or set-up daily workshops or group experiences for
youth accessing the Wellness Center around employment, wellness,
substance use, affect regulation, housing stability, etc. These are
optional group experiences that will give youth opportunity to
creatively express themselves and engage in their overall wellness
and personal goals.
Tracking data elements required into ETO and HMIS to ensure
compliance with varies grants and funder requirements.
Work to establish and strengthen partnerships with other
agencies whos services, staff and resources can benefit the overall
wellness and housing insecurity our youth face. This includes
tracking volunteers, services and resources given and received.
Offer individual case management services to youth in areas of
employment, education, wellness, housing instability, safety
planning and relationship support.
Assist Community Involvement Coordinator in facilitating
community outings to participating businesses, corporations,
wellness opportunities and cultural events.
Monitor program budget, supplies, and incentive programs.
Other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: Bachelors degree preferred in field related to social
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 3 years of experience working with youth
experiencing homelessness and trafficking. Must be knowledgeable
around applying harm reduction principles in a trauma-informed
environment with experience in drop-in center or outreach
SKILLS: Must have strong communication and organizational
skills. Must be computer literate (Microsoft Office, etc.) Must be
a self-starter and team player with the ability to work with other
staff members, youth, vendors and the public. A desire to build
positive relationships with youth and an orientation towards
strength-based positive youth development a must.
TRANSPORTATION:Must have valid CA Drivers license and be able to
drive residents to activities using CHC vans.
WORKING CONDITIONS: General business/office environment. Must be
able to lift up to 40 lbs. on occasion, bend, sit and stand for
prolonged periods of time. Some weekend/night/holiday work may be
required. Full-Time 40 hours per week.
EQUIPMENT USED:Computers, calculators, fax machines, telephone
and other equipment required.
