Job Summary

Reporting to the VP, Health Transformation Lab, the Medical Director, Clinical Product Development Clinical Innovation & Technology Integration will develop and execute a vision to use clinical expertise, data science and technology to transform the way physicians and provider organizations work together with one another and with payor partners like Blue Shield of CA to help Californians achieve their best health.

The Medical Director will leverage his/her/their clinical, data, technology and advanced analytics expertise to develop and design products, services and solutions that exponentially, meaningfully and measurably improve care delivery, care coordination, practice administration and, of course, the way they partner with payors to improve patient health outcomes.

S/he/they will lead a team of health care practitioners, data analysts, technologists, and clinical operations specialists to identify the problems we should solve together, for and with whom, and how. S/he/they will lead the team in turning hypotheses and insights into prototypes and products that solve urgent, complex, and persistent problems for healthcare providers, their teams, and partners.

Additionally, the Medical Director will lead the development of advanced analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities, and innovative applications to identify emergent opportunities for prevention and intervention, health equity, cost savings and care management efficiencies.

While ensuring ethical, compliant use of data and technology, the Medical Director will cultivate and nurture a culture of creativity, tinkering, collaboration and disciplined experimentation that leads to breakthrough learning and results that can be validated.

Finally, the Medical Director will be a critical medical and business leader who consults on initiatives across the Health Transformation Lab and across Blue Shield of CA. His/her/their key partners are leaders of the Payment Innovation, Community Health, Population Health Equity, Design Studio, Health Transformation Acceleration, Data & Analytics and IT teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and design of clinical data and technology products, services, and solutions
  • Design and conduct bench experiments using the data science sandbox and healthcare, public health, and other data from multiple sources
  • Clinical lead and consultant for new and innovative product and initiatives
  • Partner with Health Transformation teams to design and implement new clinical technology and data solutions, payment approaches, and holistic health and health equity interventions
  • Partner with Health Transformation teams to identify appropriate clinical protocols and outcome measures
  • Present Health Reimagined and advanced analytics findings to external audiences

Knowledge and Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience designing and developing healthcare, health and wellness, and/or data and technology products and services for physicians, healthcare organizations, and/or patients
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working in a clinical setting with a focus on innovative practice transformation
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience and advanced expertise with ambulatory information systems, EHR systems and practice management systems
  • 6+ years of experience managing and leading teams and coaching for performance required
  • Demonstrated experience developing, prototyping and deploying algorithms to deliver exceptional results
  • Demonstrated experience using descriptive and predictive analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning to identify and act upon opportunities and/or develop products and services or business solutions
  • Proven ability to develop and lead high-performing teams
  • Active, unencumbered license (MD or DO) required
  • Upon hire, obtain CA license (MD or DO) within the annual testing cycle timeframe
  • Undergraduate degree in data science, computer science, informatics or related
  • Prior clinical work and board certification in Primary Care, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, or Emergency Medicine
  • Experience designing evidence- or clinically- based products and services in other industries
  • Experience with designing and implementing innovation approaches to care delivery and a sound understanding of the connection to community and population health
  • Masters degree in data science, computer science or related
  • Masters degree in Business Administration (MBA)
