Job Description:

Roger Kornberg's lab at Stanford is seeking a highly motivated research assistant (Life Science Research Professional 1) to join our team (1-year fixed-term position with a possibility for extension). Your research work will focus on protein expression and purification of the different components of the transcriptional machinery. In this role you will be working closely with scientists who are using structural biology to answer fundamental questions regarding gene expression and chromatin structure.Your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Engineering recombinant protein in yeast, E.coli, or insect cell.
  • Purification pf proteins at semi-preparative or preparative scale.
  • Introducing modifications on proteins using different chemistries.
  • Performing biochemical assays to test protein functions.Candidates should have a background in the biological or chemical sciences and laboratory experience with the following techniques:
    • standard molecular biology techniques including plasmid DNA transformation and propagation, PCR, mutagenesis, and cloning.
    • chromatography, specifically protein-based applications of ion exchange, affinity, and size exclusion chromatography/other size-based separation techniques.You will work directly with Dr. Rayees Mattoo. His research explores is focused on understanding the mechanism of RNA Polymerase II mediated (eukaryotic) transcription using biochemical and structural approaches.DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS :
      • Bachelor's or higher degree in biology, chemistry, or a related scientific field.
      • Experience in protein purification techniques including ion exchange, SEC, and affinity tag methods.
      • Experience in standard molecular biology techniques.
      • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
      • Experience in culturing bacteria and yeasts.
      • Experience with laminar flow hoods for culturing insect or mammalian cells.EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
        • General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.
        • Demonstrated ability to apply theoretical knowledge of science principals to problem solve work.
        • Ability to maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
        • General computer skills and ability to quickly learn and master computer programs, databases, and scientific applications.
        • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
        • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to accurately complete detailed work.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
