The External Affairs function advances our companys mission and positions Blue Shield as a respected leader in delivering and transforming health care to improve health outcomes for all Californians. We do this by influencing state and federal policy, investing in relationships, community and population health initiatives, and informing and engaging constituents regarding Blue Shield's impact.



The Principal, Strategic Planning and Communications (official title - Principal, Functional Engagement & Communications) is an External Affairs team leader who helps position the function for success internally and externally. This role is responsible for four key areas of functional support: 1) establishing consistent functional standards for measuring, reporting and celebrating results (50%), 2) leading functional initiatives to create a great place to work for the external affairs team (10%), 3) partnering with Internal Communications to integrate External Affairs messages in corporate channels (25%) and 4) supporting executive communications (15%). S/he will report directly to the Senior Vice President, External Affairs. This position will also provide support to the rest of the External Affairs leadership team.



The Principal, Strategic Planning & Communications will:

* Establish External Affairs brand and ensure consistent standards for internal reporting.

* Establish External Affairs brand and ensure consistent standards for internal reporting.

* Support the External Affairs Leadership Team in driving the quarterly reporting for the Operating Committee, as well as the annual human and financial capital planning for the function.

* Support the project management of key initiatives to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget and within scope.

* Manage and monitor the External Affairs Executive Admin budget.

* Provide executive communications support to the leader of the function for external and internal speaking engagements, partnering with Internal Communications when appropriate.

* Plan functional meetings that help the external affairs team align work with priorities and better connect to other areas within the function and celebrations to acknowledge great work.

* Develop an engagement strategy to ensure awareness and support among key stakeholders.

* Develop integrated functional communication plan and content for External Affairs initiatives.

* Develop and execute the function leaders social media calendar for broad engagement in partnership with the Corporate Communications, Corporate Citizenship and Corporate Reputation and Thought Leadership teams.

* Coordinate closely with key workstreams in External Affairs, as well as Internal Communications and Marketing to ensure message alignment and calendar coordination.

* Contribute to the development of the annual external communications strategy.
