BACKGROUND: ACCESS, a 501(c)(3) organization, is dedicated to advancing access to reproductive health and justice. Its mission is to remove barriers to sexual and reproductive health care and build the power of communities to demand health, justice, and dignity. ACCESS was founded in 1993 by clinic escorts in response to the Supreme Court decision in Planned Parenthood v Casey. The vision for ACCESS was not only to provide information and practical support on all aspects of reproductive health, but to also build a community actively working to meet the real needs of people experiencing reproductive oppression. We have a multi-pronged approach to our work, including direct service and practical support via our Healthline (our bilingual English and Spanish hotline), community organizing, and policy advocacy. ACCESS envisions a future where people decide for themselves whether, when, and how to have children. We envision a future where people are treated with dignity and respect in those decisions. We envision a future where our voices are clear and strong; where each pregnant person trusts themselves, knows their own power and uses it to demand that everyone have the social, political, and economic power and resources to make healthy decisions for themselves and their families. The impetus for such a strategic plan is in response to multiple organizational transitions. Previous organizational structures have allowed for ACCESS to experiment with various working relationships, including program development and design. At this time, a time-bound strategic plan is necessary to move ACCESS work forward. The intent of this strategic planning process is to reground in our values, and center the communities we serve from a place of camaraderie, compassion, self-care, and resisting and redefining traditional work practices. Regardless of position, ACCESS has always attracted folks who are passionate, dedicated and invested in radical change for the liberation of our communities.
